Your environmentally friendly product of choice.

How does Swanstone solid surface lessen environmental impact? Because it's built to last. Five times stronger than the competition and heat resistant to 450°, it's nearly impossible to damage, yet easily restored should the need arise. It's nontoxic, non-carcinogenic, and chemically inert. That's what makes Swanstone your environmentally friendly product of choice for green building design.

How does Swanstone solid surface lessen environmental impact?

It's built to last a lifetime.

Swanstone is five times stronger than competitors.
It's a hard, non-porous material that is heat resistant up to 450°.
Swanstone is resistant to chemicals, bacteria, mildew, and mold, and does not affect plants, soil or water.

Our manufacturing process is environmentally responsible.

Our closed molding process significantly reduces VOCs and other pollutants.
We recently instituted an enhanced state-of-the-art oil-recycling program.
Solvents are recovered onsite, reducing consumption by 40%.
We recycle all ferrous metals and more than 90% of scrap cardboard.

Achieve LEED® credits with Swanstone.

LEED 2009 / LEED V.3

Building Reuse: Maintain 50% of Interior Non-Structural Elements — 1 Point

Intent: Extend the life cycle of existing building stock, conserve resources, retain cultural resources, reduce waste and reduce environmental impacts of new buildings as they relate to materials manufacturing and transport.

Requirements: Use existing interior non-structural elements (interior walls, doors, floor coverings and ceiling systems) in at least 50% (by area) of the completed building (including additions). If the project includes an addition to an existing building, this credit is not applicable if the square footage of the addition is more than 2 times the square footage of the existing building.

Swanstone® can help earn this point because it is the most durable solid surface material available. Surfaces can be left in place during renovation and easily be cleaned/restored to original beauty.

Materials Reuse — 1-2 Points

Intent: Reuse building materials and products in order to reduce demand for virgin materials and to reduce waste, thereby reducing impacts associated with the extraction and processing of virgin resources.

Requirements: Use salvaged, refurbished, or reused materials such that the sum of these materials constitutes at least 5% or 10%, based on cost, of the total value of materials on the project.

Swanstone is resistant to impact, gouges, dings, dents and stains thus reducing the chances of needing replacement and disposal. It can easily be refinished to its original beauty.

Regional Materials — 1-2 Points

Intent: Increase demand for building materials and products that are extracted and manufactured within the region, thereby supporting the use of indigenous resources and reducing the environmental impacts resulting from transportation.

Requirements: Use building materials or products that have been extracted, harvested or recovered, as well as manufactured, within 500 miles of the project site for a minimum of 10% or 20% (based on cost) of the total materials value.

Virtually all of the more than 200 Swanstone Certified Fabricators (the place of finished manufacture or final assembly) are located well within 500 miles of the construction/ remodeling site. This lessens the environmental impact of transporting products longer distances. The U.S. Green Building Council considers "manufactured" as assembly of a product which is then furnished to the installer.

Recycled Content — 1-2 Points

Intent: Increase demand for building products that incorporate recycled content materials, thereby reducing impacts resulting from extraction and processing of virgin materials.

Requirements: Use materials with recycled content such that the sum of post-consumer recycled content plus one-half of the pre-consumer content constitutes at least 10% or 20% based on cost of the total value of the materials in the project.

Although the products themselves are not LEED certified, the Our Planet Collection colors contribute to LEED credits 4 for recycled content and 6 for rapidly renewable materials. Applies only to the Our Planet Collection – coming soon.

Rapidly Renewable Materials

Intent: Reduce the use and depletion of finite raw materials and long-cycle renewable materials by replacing them with rapidly renewable materials.

Requirements: Use rapidly renewable building materials and products (made from plants that are typically harvested within a ten-year cycle or shorter) for 2.5% of the total value of all building materials and products used in the project, based on cost.

Although the products themselves are not LEED certified, the Our Planet Collection colors contribute to LEED credits 4 for recycled content and 6 for rapidly renewable materials. Applies only to the Our Planet Collection – coming soon.

Low-Emitting Materials: Adhesives & Sealants — 1 Point

Intent: Reduce the quantity of indoor air contaminants that are odorous, irritating and/or harmful to the comfort and well-being of installers and occupants.

Requirements: All adhesives and sealants used on the interior of the building (defined as inside of the weatherproofing system and applied on-site) shall comply with the requirements of the following reference standard: Adhesives, Sealants and Sealant Primers: South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) Rule #1168, VOC (volatile organic compound) limits.

Swanstone has directed its Certified Fabricators and Installers to use installation adhesives and sealants with low VOC (volatile organic compound) emissions to comply with this air quality standard.
